Copper Clad
Copper clad is FR-4 glass epoxy sheet laminated with copper. Sheets ranging in thickness
from .007" to .250" are laminated either one side or two sides
with copper. The thickness of the copper is measured in ounces
per square foot with a typical range of 1/2 ounce to up to 2 ounces.
Of course, the sheet thickness and the copper clad weight can
be specified outside these typical ranges.
Copper Clad FR-4 has become the standard of the printed circuit industry. This
product possesses high mechanical strength, good machinability
and consistent drilling quantities, such as minimum bit wander
and excellent hole plate-through.
The resin for FR-4 is brominated to provide a ul 94 V-0 fire resistance without
degrading the laminate quality or performance. No other retardants
or additives are introduced to the material.
With circuitry traces getting narrower, spaces tighter, and plated
through holes occupying a greater percentage of circuit board
requirements, the dielectric strength and qualities of FR-4 are critical to both high yield and product reliability.
